THE Solomon Islands Maritime Authority has announced plans to modernize the Solomon Islands National University Maritime College facilities in an effort to improve the training and education given to maritime students.
The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Maritime College, located at Ranadi, east of Honiara, is known for its inclusive curriculum and experienced lecturers. However, with advancements in technology and changes in industry trends, the need for modernized facilities has become essential.
Agnes Gaote’e, a representative of the Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA), highlighted the proposed plan during International Day of the Seafarers 2024 at the SINU Maritime College.
She announced that the Solomon Islands Maritime Association is in the process of establishing a maritime development fund to prioritize education and upgrade the SINU Maritime College.
“We are committed to providing the highest quality education and training to our students,” Gaote’e said. “These upgrades will not only benefit our current students but also future generations of maritime professionals.”
The news has been welcomed by students and industry professionals alike, who believe that the improvements will further solidify the college’s reputation as a leading institution in maritime education.
According to Gaote’e, SIMA wants to support maritime labor mobility by providing young Solomon Islanders with employment opportunities in international shipping through maritime education and training.
“For those familiar with maritime education and training, seafarers hold competency-based qualifications and can progress from the entry level as deck and engineers’ ratings to the highest levels of masters and engineer officers in highly skilled nautical and engineering functions,” she said.
Gaote’e also emphasized the importance of maritime training, education, and labor mobility in fostering capacity development and job opportunities for women and girls in maritime careers.
The SIMA Representative added that this will not only offer job opportunities to youth but will also build the capacity and experience of our domestic shipping industry.
She later urged development partners to support the initiative and expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing maritime training and education, which offer sustainable employment opportunities.
