SAFETY is the most important and paramount obligation of every seafarer, said Captain Diana Hill Su’ulisau, speaking on behalf of the seafarers in the Solomon Islands maritime industry.

Captain Hill has spoken out at the Day of the Seafarer celebration 2024 in Honiara about the importance of prioritizing the safety of seafarers in the maritime industry. As a captain with years of experience at sea, she understands the dangers and challenges that come with working in the open ocean.

She stressed that seafarers work in a very risky and hazardous environment away from the public eye, day in and day out, in confined spaces exposed to the weather and the vast, unpredictable ocean.

“Safety is the most important obligation of every seafarer to guarantee the survival of passengers, crews, cargoes, vessels, and the environment,” Captain Hill said.

She underlined the need for proper training, equipment, and protocols to ensure the well-being of seafarers. She stressed that their safety should be the top priority for shipping companies and regulatory bodies.

The captain highlighted the importance of seafarers adhering to safety practices in both their workplace and home, highlighting the need for improved safety equipment provision.

“Many of our ships need to have safety equipment for seafarers. I feel for seafarers when they carry out their duties without proper PPE equipment for their safety and protection,” she said.

She said that with the Day of the Seafarer 2024 theme, ‘Sailing into the Future, Safety First’,” it is important for us to work as a team.

“It is important to work as a team to make sure’safety first’ is maintained or improved for the future of shipping and a safe sector at the pace of technological change and innovation,” said Captain Diana.

“Seafarers are the backbone of the maritime industry, and their safety should be non-negotiable,” Captain Hill stated. “It is our responsibility to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to do their job effectively and return home safely to their families.”

As a respected figure in the maritime community, Captain Hill’s words carry weight and are likely to spark further discussions and actions to ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers around the world. With her leadership and advocacy, the maritime industry may see positive changes that benefit all those who work at sea.
