Key Government Biodiversity Policy Document-Solomon Islands National Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan (NBSAP) is Under Review

MINISTRY of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management & Meteorology (MECDM) through the Environment & Conservation Division (ECD) is reviewing one of the Government key Biodiversity Policy documents-the Solomon Islands National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan (NBSAP).

An oversight committee consists of relevant Government Ministries and NGO partners was established to oversee this process. The committee have been meeting since last year to guide this national process which expect to be whole of Government & whole of Society approach.

The review is in response to the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) which sets global biodiversity targets for all Parties to achieve. Solomon Islands as a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has produced the first NBSAP in 2009, revised & produced second edition in 2016 and is now developing the latest NBSAP.

NBSAP is an overarching biodiversity policy document which provide guidance to the country’s priorities to achieve KMGBF. It provides priority strategic actions to be supported by Partners (NGOs, CBOs, INGOs & others) implementation to achieve global targets such as target on 30 by 30. Solomon Islands is also in the process of finalizing its national targets which will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval.

Meanwhile, in their recent meeting the committee has endorsed a workplan for this year which includes important national consultations, workshops and awareness on this program. It is expected that important stakeholders in biodiversity conservation will be consulted in developing & finalising the SI NBSAP.

The Committee had emphasized the need for the Provincial Governments consultations which will include visits to all our Provinces. It will be an opportunity to present the NBSAP, its process and need for implementation support to achieve KMGBF.

MECDM anticipate usual collaboration and partnership with important stakeholders to successfully produce the NBSAP and contribute towards its implementation.
