THE FFA celebrated its 45th Anniversary with an engaging Open Day event today at its conference center in Honiara, marking a milestone in its journey.

Under the theme “Our People, Our Fisheries, Our Future: Celebrating 45 Years of Cooperation,” the event brought together primary and secondary school students from across Honiara.

For two days, on September 11th and 12th, the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) hosted students to showcase its work in fisheries and its impact on the Pacific region. The Open Day offered a unique opportunity for students to interact with FFA staff, explore various divisions within the agency, and gain insight into the vital work being done to support regional fisheries.

Dr. Manu Tupou Roosen, the FFA Director General, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, noting its significance in connecting with the younger generation.

“We are thrilled to have the students here, engaging with us and learning about the FFA’s role in supporting our fisheries and communities,” Dr. Roosen said. She highlighted the importance of such events in nurturing the aspirations of young people, noting how the students shared their future career goals and ambitions during their visit.

The Open Day, which first started in 2019, was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was revived this year with a renewed focus on community engagement. The event included various activities, such as booth visits, where students learned about different aspects of the FFA’s work.

Dr. Roosen emphasized the event’s role in fostering a sense of connection and understanding between the agency and the younger generation.

“Hearing from our children about their dreams and goals is incredibly inspiring. It’s vital for us to connect with them and show how they can be part of our efforts to improve the lives of our Pacific community,” she said.

With 10 schools participating in the first day’s program, the Open Day not only celebrated FFA’s anniversary but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations and educational opportunities for students. The FFA plans to continue this initiative annually, reinforcing its commitment to engaging with and inspiring the next generation.
