Honiara, 23 July 2026: The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) held its second consultation with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Legislative and Policy Cabinet Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 22 July 2026.
The consultations are intended to support the Ministry in fast-tracking its legislative agenda in line with the GREAT Coalition Government’s policy priorities.
The reforms aim to modernise the Ministry’s legal and policy frameworks, strengthen institutional systems, and improve the country’s capacity to address climate change, environmental management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
Sub-Committee Chairman, Mr Francis Waleanisia, expressed satisfaction with the progress made.
“I am pleased with the outcomes of today’s meeting. We are making steady progress towards achieving the GREAT Coalition Government’s key policy objectives,” Mr Waleanisia said.
“While there is still much work to be done, it is clear that changing circumstances require significant improvements to our legislative framework, enforcement and monitoring systems, disaster preparedness, and implementation arrangements.”
Mr Waleanisia emphasised that climate change remains one of the most pressing challenges facing the Solomon Islands, particularly for vulnerable low-lying coastal communities.
He said strengthening the country’s legal and policy framework is essential not only to improve national preparedness and response, but also to position Solomon Islands to better access international climate finance and support.
Mr Waleanisia also commended the Ministry for its commitment and the seriousness with which it is advancing its reform programme.
