David Hiba Sworn in as New Permanent Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The National Government, through the Public Service Commission, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr David Hiba Hiriasia as the new Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management, and Meteorology.

Mr Hiriasia was sworn in today by the Acting Governor General, Hon. Patterson Oti, at the Government House to formalise his appointment.

The Acting Governor General congratulated Hiriasia on his appointment and reminded him of his service to the Government and People of Solomon Islands.

Mr Hiriasia brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. As a meteorologist and climate scientist, he has a proven track record in climate science, climate services for adaptation, and community multi-hazard early warning systems.

His leadership skills and technical expertise will be instrumental in driving community resilience and sustainable development in the Solomon Islands.

With a Master’s degree in Applied Meteorology and Climate with Management from the University of Reading, UK, and a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology from the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre, Australia, Mr Hiriasia is well-qualified for his new role.

He has also held various positions, including Director of the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service, Deputy Director, and Senior Climate Change Officer in the Ministry, before his latest elevation to the top position.

Throughout his career, Mr Hiriasia has demonstrated strong leadership and technical skills, including project management, team leadership, and stakeholder engagement.

He has worked with various organisations, including the United Nations Development Programme, Save the Children, and the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service. He also served as a former high school teacher and tutor before joining the Public Service.

Hiriasia pledged to perform his duty to the Government with integrity and to the best of his ability during his term in Office.

The Solomon Islands Government congratulates Mr Hiriasia on his appointment and looks forward to his leadership in addressing the country’s environmental and climate change challenges.

It further extends sincere appreciation to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Dr. Chris Vehe for his capable stewardship as Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management, and Meteorology during the transitional period.
