CHIEF Engineer Gabriel Hikuhanimae of the Maritime College of Solomon Islands National University has expressed gratitude to partners for hosting the 2024 International Seafarers Day yesterday at the SINU Marine School in East Honiara.
The theme for this year’s event – Our Seafaring Future – values the contributions of seafarers around the globe and country. Maritime industry plays a critical role in global trade, transportation and connectivity.
Gabriel Hikuhanimae thanked the dignitaries, sponsors, participants, and the public for their support and commitment to the maritime industry.
Hikuhanimae emphasized that the event is a milestone achievement, and that seafarers are no longer silent adults, but are now recognized and respected.
He urged Solomon Islanders to continue championing the rights and well-being of seafarers worldwide and locally, ensuring they receive the recognition, respect, and support they deserve.
The annual International Day of the Seafarer was celebrated on June 25. The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution passed by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. Its purpose is to acknowledge the unique contribution of seafarers to world trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
