Head of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Agriculture Department, Patterson Giza, highlighted the indispensable role of forests in sustaining life, securing livelihoods, and ensuring food security for communities.

“Forests are not just trees; they are the lifeline of our environment, supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and providing essential resources that sustain millions of people worldwide,” Giza stated.

Head of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Agriculture Department, Patterson Giza.

He highlighted the significant contributions of forests to food security, noting their provision of fruits, nuts, roots, and medicinal plants, as well as their role as habitats for pollinators and wildlife essential for agriculture.

Giza emphasized the importance of forests in the Solomon Islands, where traditional farming practices and agroforestry rely on healthy forest ecosystems to maintain a steady supply of food and water. However, he warned of the threats posed by deforestation, land degradation, and climate change, making conservation and restoration efforts more crucial than ever.

This year’s celebration spotlights the Bloody Ridge Forest Restoration Initiative, a commitment to restoring degraded landscapes, preserving biodiversity, and securing a sustainable future. Giza noted that Bloody Ridge, known for its historical significance as a World War II landmark, is not only a cultural and historical treasure but also an essential site for conservation and tourism efforts in the country. Restoring the forest at Bloody Ridge, he said, will ensure the protection of vital natural resources for future generations.

“As we mark this day, let us recognize our collective responsibility to protect and restore our forests,” Giza urged. “Government ministries, NGOs, learning institutions, communities, and individuals must work together to promote sustainable forest management through agroforestry, reforestation, and conservation efforts.”

He reiterated that these actions are crucial in maintaining a balance between environmental sustainability and food production, adding, “On this International Day of Forests, let us reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage.”

Giza concluded his speech by stressing the interconnectedness between forest health and human well-being: “The health of our forests is directly linked to the well-being of our people, our food systems, and our future. Together, let us forge a sustainable path where forests continue to nurture both the land and our communities.”
