Solomon Islands environmental scientist and public health advocate, Dr. Edgar Pollard on this year’s International Youth Day, delivered a powerful message to the country’s young people: you can be the generation that ends malaria.

Speaking in an online special interview with Empower Healthy Isles, Dr. Pollard shared his hope and belief in the ability of young Solomon Islanders to take the lead in health challenges — especially in the fight against malaria.

“Hello everyone, my name is Edgar and happy World Youth Day to all the young people out there,” he began warmly. “I think the role of young people is critical for malaria in the country of Solomon Islands.”

The Solomon Islands remains one of the countries still affected by malaria, a disease that continues to impact communities across the islands. But Dr. Pollard sees a future where this can change — and young people are key to making that happen.

“We are a young nation… full of young people,” he said. “Health challenges like malaria need young people to take part. My call is for young people to be ambassadors in this fight.”

Dr. Pollard urged youth to take ownership of their health and community wellbeing.

“If young people truly believe that we can live in a malaria-free country one day — hey, that’s powerful,” he said. “You must really take ownership. Even if you feel disempowered or like a bystander, you can still play a role.”

He encouraged youth to stay informed and seek knowledge, both in school and outside of it.

“Try to understand what the issues and challenges are. By becoming better informed, then you can come up with ideas and solutions too,” he added. “Who knows, maybe there’s a young person out there in Los Alamos with the next great idea that will help us move toward elimination.”

Dr. Pollard also emphasized that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but of today.

“You are role models for the generation coming behind you,” he said. “Step up and be leaders. Don’t just depend on others or wait for big money — take ownership. This is your body, your health, your country.”

As the Solomon Islands continues working towards a malaria-free future, Dr. Pollard’s message is clear: the youth have the power, the passion, and the potential to lead the charge.

Takeaway for Youth:

Happy International Youth Day to all the young leaders across the islands. Your voice matters, and your actions can change the future.
