A high-level meeting was held at the Chinese Embassy in Solomon Islands on August 9th to enhance the export of local agricultural and fishery products to China.

Attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET), Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), Solomon Islands Commodities Export Division (SICED), and the Chinese Embassy, the discussion focused on building a sustainable trade partnership.

This comes after Prime Minister Manele’s visit to China, where three SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) Protocols were signed for exporting coffee beans, cocoa beans, and both cultured and wild aquatic products to the Chinese market.

Biosecurity officials who attended training in China shared their observations, emphasizing that strict environmental standards must be met to ensure compliance with Chinese import requirements.

While the trade promises economic growth, environmental advocates have called for stringent safeguards to protect Solomon Islands’ biodiversity from over-exploitation.
