The Keigol and Mondo communities on Northern Ranongga Island have united to improve environmental health through a major community cleanup campaign as part of ongoing recovery efforts following Tropical Cyclone Maila.

Held from 6 to 11 October 2026 in Keigol Village, the initiative promoted cleaner surroundings, improved hygiene, and greater awareness of environmental health issues. The cleanup was accompanied by a health awareness programme led by retired medical specialist Mr Gad Koito under the theme “Cleanliness,” encouraging communities to adopt healthy practices and prevent waterborne diseases.

The campaign brought together men, women, youth, children, and persons with disabilities to clear rubbish, clean public spaces, and create a healthier living environment. Community members successfully cleaned areas stretching from the village playing field to the seashore while also supporting preparations for new water tank installations.

TC Maila MFAT Project Officer Mr Jason Boso said the activity highlighted the importance of community participation in building cleaner, safer, and more resilient villages. Despite limited cleaning equipment, residents embraced the initiative, which promoted environmental stewardship, physical wellbeing, and collective action.

Upcoming project activities will include the distribution of water tanks and cleaning tools to other cyclone-affected communities on Ranongga Island, alongside continued hygiene awareness programmes.

The TC Maila MFAT Recovery Project is funded by the Government of New Zealand through ADRA New Zealand and implemented by ADRA Solomon Islands, supporting vulnerable communities on Ranongga and Kolombangara Islands through water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities, shelter assistance, and recovery support.

Together, communities are rebuilding stronger while protecting the environment for a cleaner, healthier future.
