Fisheries Students Visits FFA

SOLOMON Islands National University (SINU) year 2 students undertaking Fisheries Studies have today visited Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Office as part of their studies under Fisheries Information processing and Lab unit.

The visit was organized purposely for students to see, observe and gain extra knowledge to advanced what they have learned, how the Forum Fisheries Agency FFA staff do data collecting on vessels coming into the country and fisheries management rules and regulations. This also includes keeping updated vessels involving in the illegal fishing activities in the country.

A year 2 student, Jessy Sifi said the field trip is mainly for the students to observe and see how FFA Officers work on, gather and analyze data collected, and observed how they get in track and monitored vessels coming in the country, and Forum Fisheries rules and regulations.

“The trip is mainly for us students to observe how the staff of FFA do their work in ensuring our Exclusive Economic Zone and boundaries are safe from illegally fishing activities using technology,” Sifi said.

After the trip, I for sure will gain new knowledge especially on rules and regulations of the FFA as it is the body who looks after Fisheries related issues,” Sifi added.

Forum Fisheries Agency’s Fisheries Operation’s Division leads Monitoring, Control and Surveillance services to Pacific nations.

The visit was successfully ended with light refreshment.

Fisheries lecturer, Mr. Collin Gerenia accompanied the students during the visit today assisted by Madam, Madeline KILI Solo.
